About Me

Adding a Little Spring Décor

With the long harsh winter nearly over, I am excited about the wonders of spring. I can’t wait to unpack my spring wardrobe from storage. I’m also looking forward to spending some time outdoors in my flower garden. However, before I venture outdoors, I need to give the inside of my home some attention by adding a little spring décor. During this time of year, I decorate my home with pastel, bright hues. For instance, I like to fill white dainty teacups with beautiful artificial flowers. I also like to display whimsical items such as a multicolored Easter bunny. On this blog, you will learn how to transform the interior of your home this spring.

3 Ways To Incorporate Color And Prints Into Your Home

by Melinda Collins

Colors and prints can be the hardest design features to add to your home. Do not be afraid to make your home more visually interesting as long as you know the basic rules for incorporating these elements.

1. Pick A Base Color

Since the base color you choose will be the most prominent, you should be highly selective about the color you choose. Most people will opt for a neutral base color, such as black, white, gray, or brown, but other colors can work, depending on their saturation. For example, many people shy away from warm colors, such as yellow, orange, and red, as being a base color since they can be overwhelming. Orange can work as a base color if you opt for a more or less saturated variation, such as melon or burnt orange. The main advantage of neutrals is there are infinite possibilities of colors that will complement them.

2. Develop A Color Scheme

The easiest way to develop a color scheme using your base color will be to work with a color wheel. Just working with complementary colors can make your interior design look more like the holidays or team colors, so try working with a more complex scheme. A triad color scheme is slightly more complex and allows you to bring in two or more additional colors. Your triad scheme will be the two colors that are equal distance from your base color on the color wheel. For orange, the two colors would be blue-violet and green, or variations of these colors. The easiest color scheme for most people will be monochromatic, which simply entails using different versions of your base color. This is the easiest way to incorporate more colors while being certain they work well together.

3. Play With Prints

Prints, especially mixing prints, can be a challenging part of interior design. One method is to take a tip from quilters. In quilts, you will typically see a mix of large, medium, and small prints since it creates visual interest. Do not be afraid to mix prints, such as florals and stripes. To mix florals and stripes, you should pick one to be a larger print, while the other is small and subtle. This prevents both patterns from competing for attention. Instead of going with typical prints, try incorporating fun prints by checking your local fabric store, especially the novelty cotton. You can find anything from apples to playing cards printed on novelty cottons. These can be great ideas for throw pillows or wall hangings.

Adding color and prints to your home should be a fun experience. Being less hesitant about thinking outside the box will give you endless possibilities for your next interior design project. To learn more, contact your local home designer today.
