Adding a Little Spring Décor

With the long harsh winter nearly over, I am excited about the wonders of spring. I can’t wait to unpack my spring wardrobe from storage. I’m also looking forward to spending some time outdoors in my flower garden. However, before I venture outdoors, I need to give the inside of my home some attention by adding a little spring décor. During this time of year, I decorate my home with pastel, bright hues. For instance, I like to fill white dainty teacups with beautiful artificial flowers. I also like to display whimsical items such as a multicolored Easter bunny. On this blog, you will learn how to transform the interior of your home this spring.

Tile Color Blocking

by Melinda Collins

Color blocking is an interior design technique that adds a pop of color to surfaces. Tiled surfaces that may normally contain colors and textures that coordinate with surrounding materials can be upgraded with color blocking. A kitchen countertop, part of a wall, a vanity, a tub, and a shower stall's flooring are surfaces that you can enhance with a color blocking design.

Tile Types

Porcelain and ceramic are two tile types that are often used as floor and wall coverings. They are both made with a clay firing process. The absorption rate of these two tile types is what makes the tile varieties different from one another. A denser clay product is used to make porcelain tiles. This formula lowers the amount of moisture that porcelain absorbs. A lighter, less compacted clay product is used to make ceramic tiles. Ceramic tiles absorb a higher moisture content than porcelain.

Mosaic tiles consist of small tile pieces that are attached together. The mosaic pieces may feature symmetrical shapes that are all the same color and texture. A mesh backing is secured to the underside of each piece that comprises a mosaic tile.

Glass tiles include translucent and colored glass varieties. The smoothness of this tile type will add a glossy sheen to tiled surfaces. Marble, limestone, and sandstone are materials that are used to make natural stone tiles. Natural stone tiles may contain a polished or matte surface.

Product Selection And Installation Materials

Color blocking can be used to highlight a small or large surface. Installing a uniquely colored backsplash behind a stove or sink or covering one wall with tiles that are a complementary color and texture to other features in a room will allow you to experience the visual power of color blocking. Color blocking will draw attention to surfaces that you tile.

Tiles that will be installed near a water source or next to an area where food and beverages will be prepared should have a low absorption rate. Tiles with a low absorption rate will maintain their strength and will not be as likely to stain as tile varieties that contain a higher absorption rate.

Choose tiles with matte surfaces for tiled areas that you will be walking on. A shower stall floor that contains matte tiles will not be as slippery as one that contains polished tiles. Use tile mastic and a trowel to install tiles. If tile pieces need to be trimmed, purchase a tile cutter to provide tiles with custom dimensions.
